An Emerald City
Destiny, Florida
is an urban planning concept for building a technologically green city; everything from parks to penthouses They describe themselves as follows, “A prototype for future cities, Destiny will be a forward thinking Environmentally Planned Community of Today™ operating with minimal impact on the environment and a hub where the latest clean technology innovations will emerge.”
While at the momeny Destiny, FL exists only on the drawing boards, the organizers envision a 64 square mile area with most of the land left untouched. This ambitious undertaking is slated to take shape in Central Florida. The developers include both private entrepreneurs and government agencies. Their goal is to create, “a sustainable, self-contained urban center outside of existing city borders…” This, then, would be a model for future urban development elsewhere. “…self-sustaining urban cores could be created to halt continued sprawl from existing cities.”
Destiny, FL appears to be the emerald city of many dreams., It’s not, however, without its critics. One such critic is Dominic Rushe.
